Since the publicat ion of the second s tudy of this series 1 a much simpler and more compact agi tat ing appara tus has been devised. Several changes have also been made in the technique of the growth inhibi t ion tes t which have el iminated occasional irregularit ies in the outcome tha t had necessi tated discarding the results of the individual experiment . Fur the rmore , it has been found tha t some of the tes t ingredients m a y be prepared the day before, thus shortening considerably the t ime required for the actual set t ing up.
